For both studying and working, it can be very difficult to keep yourself interested and focused on your work, but your writing will reflect when you’re distracted! Distractions aren’t all you should be looking out for, all subjects require their own flair to them, and it’s up to you to make sure you add it. Completing a piece of literature? Add personality to it! Finishing up a report or presentation? You should include statistics and facts.
You want whatever it is that you’re working on to turn out as the best it can be, but how can you make sure of that? There’s plenty you can do to improve the outcome of your work.
Avoid Distractions
First of all, organising yourself is very important if you find yourself to be quite busy. When working, it’s best to make sure you’ve set yourself time to do so; else you’ll keep getting interrupted. While it might not seem like there’s an issue with interruptions if you have the time, it can ruin the flow of what you write; which can be obvious to the reader!
So, it’s best to get yourself some time away from others to work, but there are still many distractions out there that can keep you from focusing. You can fight these distractions, you just need to know-how. The environment that you work in has a significant effect on how much you’ll be able to focus, so you’ll want to make sure you pick somewhere quiet and without too much in sight. Music can help keep you focused, as it cuts off the external sound; which is great if you have to work somewhere busy!
Turn off your phone! There’s no easier way to get distracted than by your phone, it’s a portal to your social circle, and can often stop you from focusing as much as you were planning. Phones these days can offer every distraction you can think of. You might be thinking it doesn’t take too long to read a text, but before you know it, you’ve gone from texting to browsing social media for the past hour – which is an hour you could have spent getting things done!
If your phone isn’t a big enough distraction for you, your workplace can offer a lot more to keep you occupied. When you have a lot to do, take the time to clear your workspace of all mess and clutter. Every procrastinator knows that ANY task is more entertaining than the one that you’re supposed to be doing right now, so just get it done and out of the way so you can focus on the real task at hand.
Be yourself!
Depending on the nature of your work, it may be requiring you to add your own personal touches to it. Adding personality to your writing helps you to make it much more about you, and less of a stiff block of text! This doesn’t go for every piece of writing, of course, but for creative writing and essays; look to put more of yourself into it to make it more interesting to the reader.
Be Confident!
Confidence is a must for any piece of writing, especially when your job is to present information to the reader. You need to display that what you know what you’re writing is true, so be clear and concise about what you have to say!
Provide Evidence
Presenting information can always be improved by backing it up with some statistics and other references, it can help make your work come across as more credible. Most people are a lot more willing and trusting when it comes to reading statistics over personal opinions or ideals, so make sure to look into studies that agree with you.
Proofreading is vital if you’re writing a factual piece or report, you need to make sure what you’ve said is accurate and without mistake. Be sure to check the statistics that you’ve used to back yourself up; you can search online for tools and resources made for calculating percent or find similar sources that show the same stats.
Keep It Neat!
For any piece of work, you should make sure that you’ve tried your best to keep it neat and organized; having clearly laid out work helps bring the focus onto your writing. Keep a consistent and easy to follow style and format throughout your writing.
Many writing softwares have a lot of tools to aid you in keeping things clean and clear, so be sure to make use of what’s offered to you! Word and Google Docs both allow you to underline text and make it bold – which is great when you need to indicate the significance of what you’ve written.
Remember when you’re writing, quality comes before quantity – it’s important that you’re able to write to a high quality without repeating yourself over and over. Plan out your work, figure out what you want to write about before you start writing, and then write each point without going on about it too much.
If you keep writing about the same point without anything more to cover, the reader is going to get bored.
Don’t rush
If you rush your work, you may find yourself making frequent mistakes and missing the purpose of what it is that you actually intended to write. If you have a large amount of work to do, schedule yourself and allow yourself enough time to get everything done without having to panic or be working up until the last minute. If you rush, you surrender the time that you would need to make improvements to your writing; leave plenty of time to make changes and proofread everything that you’ve written.
Big tasks can be pretty hard to swallow sometimes, especially if you don’t have too much time to complete them. It might be beneficial for you to organize everything into smaller tasks, that way you won’t lose interest as quickly! Remember, if you’re starting to lose interest in your work, it’s going to reflect in your words – so find a way to keep your inspiration fresh!
Reward yourself
Planning yourself a reward after finishing a long piece of work is a great incentive to stick to it and get it done, it gives you something to look forward to when you finally finish. You don’t have to go big, but maybe think about treating yourself to something small after it; it can be anything that helps you work through things that you’re not really interested in!
Finding ways to focus on your work not only helps to save the quality of what you write, but you may find that it helps you save a lot of your own personal time to do things that you actually want to do! Getting distracted is a surefire way to waste your own time – and thinking about that should be a big enough incentive to get things done as it is!
Some people actually benefit from timing themselves when they work, it helps put your day into perspective. Knowing how much time you’re spending on different tasks might help you keep your head down while you work, as it feels as if you’re working against the clock.
Keeping yourself motivated to work should be your primary goal in all of this. Motivation helps you to be more upbeat and efficient while you work, so introducing incentives and removing distractions is something everyone should do when trying to be productive. Don’t let any task get dragged down by a lack of interest – apply yourself!
