Once you graduate, there is a world of opportunity available, if you are prepared to work hard for what you want. If you think of yourself as an “ideas” person, you may be attracted to a career as an entrepreneur. If you do believe that this is a good path for you, it’s important to understand that although being an entrepreneur does mean that you work for yourself, it does not mean that you work alone.
People in your life, and those that are part of the part of the team that you build, can have a great impact of your entrepreneurial career. Dr. h. c. Harald Seiz talks about this in his book, “Think BIG – How to Conquer the World with a Great Idea”. He shows his readers how no-one achieves success as a lone wolf; we all have to rely on people and build an atmosphere of trust.
How the influence of others is important
From a very young age we begin to be influenced by the people around us. This influence can have a big impact on how we progress through life. In Dr. Seiz’s case, his mother had issues with alcohol but she still helped to develop the personality that has brought him success as an entrepreneur and author. As he says in “Think BIG”,
“My mother was a good-hearted woman…Despite all the problems she had, she also gave me support. She was proud when I took my first steps as an entrepreneur. So, I learned early to be independent, to endure things and to look ahead.”
This is common to many people. The way we interact with people, from our parents to our work colleagues, helps to shape the way we are. The important thing is to make sure that these influences have a positive impact, that strength, belief and knowledge come from the relationships that happen throughout our lives. Using influences in a positive way is an important aspect of becoming a successful entrepreneur.
The value of a team
Influence is not the only way that people can be valuable in the life of an entrepreneur; working with a team is essential. As Dr. Seiz says in “Think BIG”,
“Getting a big pack together is going to be a lot of hard work. But as a lone wolf you won’t get very far. Everyone has their limits. That’s why you need the right team.”
When choosing people for your team, you need to select individuals who share your passion for what you do. If you are to succeed as an entrepreneur, you cannot afford to be surrounded by people whose only wish is to do the job as stated, go home at the end of the day and get paid at the end of the month. You need to be involved with passionate and dedicated people, in order for you to reach your goals. While you need to have people around you in order to succeed, it’s equally important to make sure that they are the right people to accompany you on your career journey.
